Graston Technique

Dr. Maxine Helman, serving the residents living in Scarsdale, NY, and surrounding areas, offers exceptional chiropractic care for the whole family. She also specializes in the Graston technique, developed as recently as 1994.

What Is the Graston Technique?

The athlete David Graston developed the Graston technique. He became frustrated with traditional treatment protocols for his injury when it was not showing results. He then created the framework and protocol for the Graston technique, using his experience as an amateur athlete to manufacture soft tissue mobilization instruments made from stainless steel for a specialized form of massage.

How Does the Graston Technique Work?

The Graston technique aims to reduce pain and increase function and mobility in the affected area. There are six convex and concave-shaped tools with no sharp edges that are used to identify and treat the affected areas by breaking up scar tissue and stretching connective tissue to help improve mobility.

To break up the scar tissue and promote healing, a chiropractor like Dr. Helman will introduce cross-friction massage, which may cause mild inflammation, to kick-start the healing process. Some, but not all, patients report some discomfort during and after receiving the Graston technique treatment.

This type of treatment activates the mechanoreceptive and proprioceptive senses, which relates to how the body positions itself in the world as relating to external sensory input.

What Is the Graston Technique Used For?

Dr. Helman, serving the Scarsdale, NY, area, uses the Graston technique for soft tissue injuries in conjunction with other chiropractic therapies depending on your customized treatment plan. These soft tissue injuries may include some of the following:

  • Lower back pain from muscle strains and sprains
  • Neck or cervical sprains and strains
  • Plantar fasciitis and shin splints
  • Sports injuries such as tennis elbow
  • Work-related injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome

The Graston technique is often combined with a strengthening and therapeutic exercise program to maximize the benefits of this treatment protocol.

While Dr. Helman focuses on patients who are pregnant and need perinatal care, this technique is not suitable for those patients. Notably, the Graston technique is only suitable for some patients and should only be administered by an experienced and trained professional. In addition to the Graston technique, Dr. Helman offers a comprehensive list of treatments ideal for most patients so that she can provide quality chiropractic care.
